Opposition leader Tony Abbott

It could be a sign of future Liberal support for same-sex marriage, or it could just be political carrot dangling ahead of the September election, but Liberal Leader Tony Abbott has indicated his party’s policy on same-sex marriage is not set in stone.

Abbott was confronted with the issue of marriage again this week after New Zealand's parliament passed marriage equality legislation on Wednesday.

Speaking to ABC Radio, Abbott said he was still against changing the marriage laws.

“I know there are many people who don’t share my view, but my view is the same as John Howard, Kevin Rudd, Julia Gillard, Kim Beazley – and that is that the orthodox definition of marriage as between a man and a woman should continue,” Abbott said.

However, he hinted that the matter could be reconsidered in the party room after the September 14 election.
