Transgenders petition collector for free housing titles in Madurai

in INDIA, 28/03/2013

A group of transgenders from Madurai district petitioned the district collector Anshul Mishra urging to facilitate housing titles to them. They have applied for free housing patta for 20 transgenders last year, which are yet to be approved, they said.

Transgender led by A Nirosha, president of Madurai district transgender Thai Viludugal trust, urged the collector for swift action as many of them are living in poor condition, without their own house or housing patta. Last year, the district administration in Vedarpuliyankulam village allocated a piece of land to provide housing pattas for 14 transgenders. However, the transgenders are yet to get their patta as the piece of land was not surveyed and distributed to them, they said.

Nirosha also urged the collector to provide free-rice distributed by the government for transgender, living with HIV, through an NGO in a stipulated date of a month instead of distributing through ration shops. The government is providing 35kg of rice for the transgender living with HIV, but it could not be availed by them fearing their identity would be revealed to public, she said.

"There are more than 90 transgender in our trust. They don't get the rice from ration shops fearing that their identity, of being transgender living with HIV, would be revealed to public. They are not able to lead a social life due to the social stigma," she said. If the rice is distributed by an NGO, the transgenders would feel free to collect their share. It would also help the trust members to monitor whether regular medical check ups are undergone and HIV preventive measures are followed, she said.
