The Bombay High Court cleared the path for 21-year-old Bidhan Barua to undergo a sex change surgery. Bidhan had approached the court after his family threatened him against the surgery. The 21-year old spoke to IBN18 Editor-in-Chief Rajdeep Sardesai on how difficult his battle has been.
Following is an excerpt from Rajdeep Sardesai's interview with Bidhan Barua:
Rajdeep Sardesai: Bidhan, you virtually went against your family for this sex change operation, how difficult was the process?
Bidhan Barua: If a child is born with any disability and if the parents are not supportive from the childhood and rather they threaten him/her badly, what else will be his reaction? They had crossed the limit. I don't care about what they think and what they don't.
Rajdeep Sardesai: Why did you need a sex change in the first place? The law already allows same sex companionship. Why go to the court then?
Bidhan Barua: Yes it is already allowed. But I needed to appeal to the court because they had threatened the doctor, following which the doctor had stopped performing the surgery. This was the reason I had to appeal for an immediate reply and an immediate order.
