Activist Ali Erol recipient of 2013 David Kato Vision & Voice Award

in WORLD, 05/12/2012

A statement by Pan Africa ILGA congratulating recipient of the 2013 David Kato Vision & Voice Award, Ali Erol.

Pan Africa ILGA would like to congratulate recipient of the 2013 David Kato Vision & Voice Award, Ali Erol.

The second recipient of this Award, Ali Erol is a leading LGBTI activist in Turkey. The award presentation was streamed live during International Planned Parenthood Federation’s 60th Anniversary Commemoration meeting at the Pan-African Parliament on 29 November 2012.

Erol founded Kaos GL organization in 1994, the first of its kind in Turkey, and at a time when homosexuality was taboo and ‘coming out’ could lead to death threats. Ali Erol and Kaos GL are now at the forefront of the campaign for the reform of the Turkish constitution, pushing for a clause on non-discrimination of LGBTI people.

In his speech, Erol said, “The David Kato Vision and Voice Award that I am proudly receiving will make me stronger and give me more courage in improving our struggle and politics in continuing for the cause of liberation of all of us. I dedicate this Award to the millions of silent LGBTI voices around the world who are confronting hatred and persecution.”

The award is inspired by the life of Ugandan gay rights activist David Kato. To commemorate his life, the David Kato Vision & Voice Awards are awarded annually to an individual who demonstrates courage and outstanding leadership in advocating for the sexual rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people, particularly in environments where these individuals face continued rejection, marginalization, isolation and persecution. David Kato - human rights activist, friend, and colleague - was murdered in his home in Kampala, Uganda on 26 January 2011.
