Grant made history as the first trans person in New Zealand, and perhaps the commonwealth, to sit on this type of juridical body a term which was initially for five years and extended twice. She also had the honour of becoming the first trans person in the world to receive an order of merit when in 1997 she was made a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
“While it will be sad to leave I am proud of my time there and the contribution I have been able to make, I am also proud to live in a country where the fact I am a Transsexual made no difference to me being appointed.”
