Ging Cristobal, Project Coordinator for Asia at IGLHRC and Jonas Bagas, Director of TLF Share presented remarks based on the Philippines shadow report, Human Rights Violations on the Basis of Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Homosexuality in the Philippines, endorsed by 40 human rights organizations, to the UN Human Rights Committee.
They highlighted LGBT discrimination in the military, refusal for Ang Ladlad’s (an LGBT political party) participation in the 2010 election, and the discriminatory enforcement of “grave scandal” and vagrancy laws to unfairly target LGBT people and sex workers. The State responded to several questions regarding LGBT-rights from the Committee during the interactive session. The Committee is expected to release their concluding observations in the coming days.
