Thammasat transgenders permitted to wear female graduation gown gets nod from Higher Education Commission

in THAILAND, 21/08/2012

Thammasat University could allow new male graduates with "women's heart" to dress as female students for the graduation ceremony providing this is in line with the university's regulations, said Assoc Dr Piniti Ratananukul, deputy secretary general of Office of the Higher Education Commission.

Thai Rath newspaper online report Thursday that five new transgender graduates of Thammasat University have been allowed to dress as girls for the royally sponsored ceremony at the end of this month.

The paper said the university has consulted with the Royal Household Bureau about the wishes of the five students, who were born male, to dress as female students for the ceremony and the bureau replied that it was the university’s decision.

Thai Rath said the university agreed to allow the five to get dress in the female uniform because they have studied as girl students and the university felt it would be cruel to force them to wear the male uniform for the ceremony.
