LGBT group: Aquino ‘unfriend’ of Filipino gays

in PHILIPPINES, 29/06/2012

Alliance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights advocators Baguio Pride Network criticized the Aquino administration for its gross neglect of the rights and welfare of the LGBT sector and branded the President of the Philippines as an “unfriend” of gay Filipinos.

"The Baguio Pride Network decries the growing trend of violence, and even murders of LGBTs in Baguio, and Aquino is paying no heed to our reports of human rights violations and demand for human rights protections," said Baguio Pride Network, or BPN, Spokesperson Caro Galvez in a Sunday news release.

He went on to say that the Lesbians for National Democracy and ProGay, both BPN conveners, had sent the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva in May a four-page report on the condition of LGBTs in the Philippines. The report was sent to the United Nations as it was conducting its Universal Period Review of the Aquino government’s human rights compliance.

However, the Philippine U.N. review delegation that was led by Justice Secretary Leila De Lima ignored the LGBT’s concerns and recommendations.

BPN also claims that the Philippine delegation shelved a last-minute plea from the Argentine representative that the Philippines pass the antidiscrimination bill filed in Congress by Rep. Teddy Casino.

ProGay Metro Baguio Secretary General Clyde Pumihic said that the bill's passage and police action against anti-gay hate crimes are urgently needed to address the spate of “bias-motivated violations” in the region.

According to the BPN, there are 156 unsolved LGBTs murders linked to homophobia, including the fatal stabbings of “Berta” in Baguio and Dr. Andres Guimban in Bacolod.

Also, ProGay Metro Baguio condemned Sunday morning's harassment raid on the sauna Fahrenheit by members of the Quezon City Police Department. The LGBT group noted that the government chose to attack another gay establishment on LGBT Pride Week. — DVM, GMA News
