The Growing Consensus: Towards the End of Criminalization and Human Rights Violations based on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity

in WORLD, 01/06/2011

ILGA organizes a panel at the 17th session of the Human Rights Council on Tuesday 7 June 2011 from 14h00 till 16h00 in Room XXV at Palais des Nations, Geneva.

ILGA and its members and allies will hold the panel “The Growing Consensus: Towards the End of Criminalization and Human Rights Violations based on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity”.

On 22 March 2011 a Joint Statement at the UN Human Rights Council was read on behalf of 85 member countries, calling for an end to violence, criminal sanctions and human rights violations against people because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

This panel event will discuss and analyse the growing consensus of governments towards equality of LGBTI people over time while a few others are trying to introduce more severe laws against same sex consensual acts. LGBTI activists from those countries who did not sign the statement will give voice to their concerns and lobbying efforts.
