MEXICO CITY TAKES GAY MARRIAGE LEAD

in MEXICO, 19/05/2010

An Al Jazeera English video on Same-sex marriage in Mexico City, with interview to Gloria Careaga.

Same-sex couples have made history in Mexico City this week by marrying under the first law in Latin America that explicitly approves gay marriage. The legislation allows only residents of Mexico's capital to tie the knot, although marriages will be recognised in other states. Mass weddings are expected later this month. The law, passed on December 22 and put into effect on March 4, will also allow same-sex couples to adopt children. But the law still faces opposition in the traditionally conservative Roman Catholic nation. The federal government lodged a constitutional appeal against it concerning "protection of the family" at the Supreme Court last month. Al Jazeeras Rhodri Davies reports from Mexico City

(March 16, 2010).
