Argentina’s Lower House OKs Marriage Bill

in ARGENTINA, 05/05/2010

The lower house of Argentina’s congress approved a bill legalizing same-sex marriage early Wednesday morning. The bill now moves to the senate, where advocates expect a tougher challenge.

According to Bloomberg, which cited the Buenos Aires–based newspaper Clarin, the same-sex marriage bill passed the House of Deputies by a vote of 125 to 109.

The approval marks the first time the body of a legislative branch has voted for same-sex marriage in Latin America.

Supporters of the legislation expect a more difficult challenge in the senate, which could vote on the bill in upcoming weeks.
