We focus public and government attention on cases of discrimination against LGBTI people by supporting programs and protest actions, asserting diplomatic pressure, providing information and working with international organisations and the international media.

ILGA’s success lies in the achievements and progress of our more than 800 member groups from 110 countries, working together. Any organisation, business or individual interested in working for equal rights for LGBTI persons may apply to become a member of ILGA. Every one or two years, members of ILGA gather in a world conference to give guidance to its work. ILGA's work is determined by the rules set forth in its Constitution and Standing Orders.

Conference & Board

The ILGA World Conference is the highest decision-making body of ILGA regarding legislation, approval of new members and internal and external organisation. Each member organisation expresses its opinions and concerns and has the right to vote on conference matters.

The current Board of ILGA was elected in Sao Paolo, Brazil during the previous ILGA World Conference in December 2010, except for the African representatives elected at the ILGA Africa conference in Johannesburg in May 2007, the Latin American representatives elected in Curitiba at the latest ILGA Latin America and Caribbean Conference in January 2010, the Asian representatives, elected at the ILGA Asian Conference in Chiang Mai (Thailand) in January 2008 (no elections took place in Surabaya - 2010), and the European representatives elected in The Hague, The Netherlands during ILGA Europe annual conference in October 2010.

Gloria Careaga (Mexico) and Renato Sabbadini (Italy) are the Co-Secretaries General of ILGA.

Kenita Placide (St Lucia) and Naomi Ruzindana (Rwanda) are their alternates.

Minority Women in Action (Kenya), was elected as Women’s Secretariat. Coletivo de Feministas Lesbicas (Brazil) was elected as its alternate.

Transsa Dominicana (Dominican Republic) was elected as Trans Secretariat. Instituto Runa de Desarollo y Estudios Sobre Genero (Peru) was elected as its alternate.

According to ILGA's current constitution, two representatives (one female and one male) are to be elected in each region :

* Pan Africa ILGA: Linda Baumann (Namibia) and Rev Rowland Jide Macaulay (Nigeria). Judith Mwangu Ngunjiri (Kenya) is their alternate.

* ILGA-Asia: Poedjiati Fen Siang (Indonesia) and Surendra Abeysundra (Sri Lanka). Anna Kirey (Kyrgyzstan) and Toen King Oey (Indonesia) are their alternates.
