We focus public and government attention on cases of discrimination against LGBTI people by supporting programs and protest actions, asserting diplomatic pressure, providing information and working with international organisations and the international media.

ILGA’s success lies in the achievements and progress of 1044 member organisations from 117 countries, working together. Any organisation, business or individual interested in working for equal rights for LGBTI persons may apply to become a member of ILGA. Every one or two years, members of ILGA gather in a world conference to give guidance to its work. ILGA's work is determined by the rules set forth in its Constitution and Standing Orders.

Conference & Board

The ILGA World Conference is the highest decision-making body of ILGA regarding legislation, approval of new members and internal and external organisation. Each member organisation expresses its opinions and concerns and has the right to vote on conference matters.

The current Board of ILGA was elected in Stockholm, Sweden during the previous ILGA World Conference in December 2012, except for the African representatives elected at the ILGA Africa conference in Johannesburg in May 2007 and backed by an interim board elected in Stockholm, the Latin American representatives elected in Curitiba at the latest ILGA Latin America and Caribbean Conference in January 2010, the Asian representatives, elected at the ILGA Asian Conference in Chiang Mai (Thailand) in January 2008 (no elections took place in Surabaya - 2010), and the European representatives elected in Dublin, Ireland during ILGA Europe annual conference in October 2012.

Gloria Careaga (Mexico) and Renato Sabbadini (Italy) are the Co-Secretaries General of ILGA.

Azusa Yamashita (Japan) and Beto de Jesus (Brazil) are their alternates.

Minority Women in Action (Kenya), was elected as Women’s Secretariat. United and Strong (St Lucia) was elected as its alternate.

Diverlex (Venezuela) was elected as Trans Secretariat. Transgender Netwerk Nederland - TNN (The Netherlands) was elected as its alternate.

According to ILGA's current constitution, two representatives (one female and one male) are to be elected in each region :

* Pan Africa ILGA: Linda Baumann (Namibia) and Rev Rowland Jide Macaulay (Nigeria). Yahia Zaidi (Algeria) and Lame Olebile (Botswana) are their alternates. An interim steering committee was elected in Stockholm in December 2012. It consists of Linda Baumann (Namibia), Jide Macaulay (Nigeria), Lame Olebile (Botswana), Yahia Zaidi (Algeria), Samuel Opio (Uganda), Akinyi Ocholla (Kenya) and Zami Mrwata (South Africa).
Based on the Africa Group in the UN: Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Republic of the Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, the Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

* ILGA-Asia: Poedjiati Fen Siang (Indonesia) and Surendra Abeysundra (Sri Lanka). Toen King Oey (Indonesia) is their alternate.
