2ND ILGA-ASIA REGIONAL CONFERENCE

in PHILIPPINES, 21/06/2005

From October 20th-23rd join LGBT activists from around the world in Cebu City in the Philippines

The first ILGA-Asia Regional Conference, entitled “A to Z: The Other Asia”, was held in Mumbai, India on October 2002. It brought together Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) individual activists and organizations from the region in a celebration of the diversity that is Asia. The uniqueness as well as the commonalities of Asian LGBT life was explored.

This second ILGA-Asia Regional Conference seeks to continue the exploration. Focusing on the distinctiveness of LGBTs in Asia, this year’s conference hopes to further understand the meanings and significance of LGBT representation within the Asian cultural context.

The aim of the conference is to further probe the question “who are the LGBT people in Asia?” It seeks to explore two main questions. One, how do LGBT people view themselves (self-representations)? And two, how are LGBT people viewed by Asian societies, in particular by the family, governments, religious institutions, media and social movements (social representations)?

The conference also hopes to further strengthen the direction of ILGA-Asia as defined by its membership across the region.

This conference is open to people of all sexual identities and orientations supportive of LGBT issues and concerns in Asia.
