An informal meeting with the Brazilian delegation in Geneva
“Our aim should not only be to get the Brazilian resolution approved. We need a strong majority with few abstentions”. Beto de Jesus (Instituto Edson Neris / São Paulo)
An informal meeting was held friday April 16th between various NGO representatives and LGBT activists and a member of the Brazilian delegation in Geneva. It gave us the opportunity to stress the importance of the resolution for the LGBT communities but also to open a communication channel with the Brazilian delegation in Geneva.
Informations were exchanged on gender identity issues as the topic seems new to most government officials and needs to be better documented to be best defended next year. Beto de Jesus from Instituto Edson Neris / Brasil agreed to facilitate informations to the Brazilian Delegation.
““Our aim should not only be to get the Brazilian resolution approved. We need a strong majority with few abstentions” says Beto de Jesus. To this effect, it is important to have a year-long strategy and coordinate NGO’s dialogue with governements (not to forget other social movements). Contacts taken with GRULAC (the South American and Caribbean group at the UN) are therefore essential. Argentina already publicly declared it would support the resolution following a meeting with Comunidad Homosexual Argentina, ILGA and Argentinean Foreign Minister Bielsa) but we need not disregard any govenment from all regions of the world that could help us on the way.
