Jamaican Reggae Star Looks for Bucks in a US Concert Tour

US Attorney-General and Immigration Service should ban him from US

Top Jamaican reggae music singer Capleton (real name, Clifton George) who advocates shooting, lynching and burning of lesbian and gay people is on concert tour in the US from 9 September until 17 October.

Capleton’s hit tune “Whoa” has the line: “Sadomite and batty man mi shot up...Whoa” (Sodomite and queer man, I shoot up Whoa). His song “Bun Out Di Chi Chi” exhorts his audience to “Burn out a queer, Blood out a queer” (Blood out is Jamaican slang for “kill”). Another track is called “Give Har” which says “All boogaman and sodemites fi get killed” (All queers and sodomites should be killed). Batty Man, chi chi man and boogaman are derogatory Jamaican slang similar to faggot, poof and queer.

Capleton is using this tour as a way to break into the lucrative US pop market. If he and other murder-music singers achieve a
breakthrough in North America, there is likely to be a subsequent rise in gay-bashing attacks by some of his fans as has happened in Jamaica and the UK. “That is why he must be stopped” said Brett Lock of the UK-based gay and lesbian human rights group OutRage!, which is co-ordinating a worldwide campaign against “kill gays” singers.

Capleton has never apologised for his incitements to murder lesbians and gay men. His “kill gays” songs are still in circulation. He has not withdrawn them. He is still profiting from his murder music Mr Lock added.

OutRage! is urging US gay rights and human rights groups to press for the cancellation of Capleton’s concerts on the grounds that he incites the murder of gays and lesbians, and that his performance may lead to public disorder and to homophobic hate crimes.

“We call on US gay and human rights groups to pressure the police, city authorities, concert promoters, venue owners and concert sponsors to get the concerts cancelled,” said Peter Tatchell of OutRage!.

“No one would publicise or promote a singer who advocated killing black or Jewish people. A performer who glorifies and encourages the murder of lesbians and gay men should not be rewarded with concerts and financial success.”

“Securing the cancellation of Capleton’s concert is very important. By hitting him in the pocket, it will help pressure Capleton and other anti-gay Jamaican singers to abandon their murderous incitements. Once they start losing money, they will soon drop their violent lyrics. Driving homophobia out of Jamaican music will have a huge positive impact on Jamaican culture and attitudes to the benefit of all lesbian and gay Jamaicans.”

“In a free society, Capleton has a right to criticize homosexuality. But he does not have a right to advocate the killing of lesbians and gay men. He has over-stepped the mark.”

“Free speech does not include the right to encourage the killing of other human beings. Incitement to murder is a criminal offence. We want his concerts dropped because he endorses violent hate crimes, not because he insults gay people,” said Mr Tatchell.

OutRage! is asking LGBT groups to press the US Attorney-General and US Immigration Service to issue a banning order prohibiting Capleton’s entry into the US on the grounds that he incites the murder of lesbians and gay men.

“Inciting murder is a criminal offence under US law and grounds for an exclusion order. Other extremists, such as the Muslim cleric, Dr. al-Qaradawi, have been banned from the US because they advocate murder. Capleton should be denied entry too. He is a threat to public order and his concerts could provoke hate violence against lesbians and gays,” added Mr Tatchell.
