Transgender activist Kalki Subramaniam has alleged that she was sexually assaulted by two unidentified men when she was returning to her home in Auroville, near Puducherry, on June 2. She also alleged that police refused to register a complaint in this regard.
Over the years, there have been various efforts on the part of the State Government to integrate members of the transgender community into mainstream society. While nearly 10 years ago, the then Jayalalithaa Government, in a path-breaking initiative issued appointment to transgenders in State government departments, around four years ago, the then DMK regime allowed transgenders to enter colleges under the ‘Third Gender’ category.
Based on standards and recommendations of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), the US Department of State announced that beginning June 10, 2010, a valid certification from a medical physician will be sufficient to have the passport gender changed, with sex reassignment surgery (sex-change surgery) no longer a prerequisite.
