Adding a new dimension to her battle in securing her community’s rights, a well known transgender and activist is making her electoral debut in the April 27 Lok Sabha polls in Tamil Nadu. Activist Kalki Subramaniam, a writer and an actor, would contest from Pollachi, her home town, as an independent.
Kalki Subramaniam is a journalist, writer, actor and activist. She holds two masters: in Journalism and Mass Communication and International Relations. Now, she is an entrepreneur. She is also a transgender. That makes her, she says, India's first transgender entrepreneur.
A few days before she killed herself, Sowmiya had called up Kalki, saying that she needed to chat with her. But as it happened, Kalki was in Punjab at that time and couldn’t meet her right away. Kalki’s 10 minute film on Sowmiya ‘Aval Peyar Sowmiya’ (Her name is Sowmiya) has generated widespread attention. This short and simple film has brought the plight of India’s transgender community into focus. >>>
Five transgender rights activists from India speak candidly about their life, love and relationships. Produced and directed by Chennai-based activist Kalki Subramaniam, as part of the Project Kalki initiative.
