Shaping ILGA’s agenda: a participatory process amongst 667 member groups

On behalf of the Board of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA), and our local partners Coletivo de Feministas Lésbicas, Grupo Dignidade, Grupo Arco-Íris, and Instituto Edson Néris, it is our pleasure to invite you to attend the XXV ILGA World Conference to be held in Sao Paulo, Brazil, between the 4 and 9 December 2010. As you may remember, Rio de Janeiro was the city voted for hosting the 2010 conference at the last world conference held in Vienna in 2008. However due to logistical problems the Executive Board of ILGA and the Brazilian organizers agreed on moving the conference location from Rio de Janeiro to Sao Paulo.

The theme of the conference will be “Building the way forward in times of crisis”. In the last few years and since the last World Conference in Vienna in 2008, it has become even more evident that our movement can be very vulnerable to crises, them being political, social, or economic ones. However, unstable conditions can also represent turning points and opportunities for the movement to further the human rights agenda of LGBTI people.

The conference will address how the movement is responding to crises and how it can strategize to bring along positive change. The conference will start on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th December with two pre-conferences organized by the Trans and Women Secretariats of ILGA. The World Conference will start on Monday 6th. The organizers are planning a very busy event with many workshops and panels that will engage in a variety of topics including fundamentalism, violence against LGBTI people, and intersex issues. A call for proposals and nominations will be launched on August 23.

Those interested are advised to make the travel arrangements accordingly. ILGA offers scholarships for activists who would otherwise be unable to participate in the conference for financial reasons. There are only a very limited number of scholarships available this year, and therefore those interested are encouraged to seek funding in advance within their own organisation or from other available funding sources. More details about ILGA’s scholarship programme are found elsewhere on our website.

Thanks to the extensive ILGA membership this is a truly international event that represents an ideal opportunity for strategizing, networking and building alliances.

We look forward to seeing you in Sao Paulo!

Kind regards
