The 20-something woman received gender therapy and sex-reassignment surgery courtesy of the Chinese government. But, Hong Kong does not allow people to change their gender on their birth certificates. The woman’s case has been accepted by the High Court of Hong Kong and could have long-term ramifications for transgender rights.

Hong Kong has made many advances in LGBT rights as of late — a gay pride parade kicked off last year.
