Bruno A. and Marc-Henri B., two Cameroonian citizens are actually imprisoned for homosexuality in Yaoundé central prison. They were arrested on September 27, 2010, by some officers of the Yaoundé I gendarmerie in the house of a common friend. The police officers were investigating a case of robbery committed by a stranger in the neighborhood.

The chief officer of the gendarmerie states that ‘the named Emmanuel M. is accused of stealing at the house Mademoiselle D. H. […] While going through his pockets, we have founded some condoms and lubricants with the brand Glisse entre mecs[1] and the mention Gay for homosexual use. He says to have picked them at his friends’ house in Yaoundé. So, a search was ordered and carried out at their house where a huge pack of condoms and lubricants for homosexual use was founded […] The named Bruno A. and Marc-Henri B. have admitted that they are homosexuals […] For more certainty, the Senior doctor of the National gendarmerie was asked to carry a genital and anal examination of the accused, in order to tell if they had had anal sex in the past as we suspect.’

Maître André Nlend, the lawyer of the victims takes offence at the numerous violations observed during the procedure. ‘The defendant were not caught in the act’, he says. ‘They were not given the right to have a lawyer or to keep silent. They were forced to undergo medical examination while holding handcuffs. There’s a whole range of contradictions in the statement of the police officers, and my clients did not sign them.’ A request was sent to the Public prosecutor to ask for their immediate release, and the accused will be heard on Thursday October 21.

Alternatives-Cameroun denounces the use of outreach material as an evidence of the offence. We call upon the Cameroonian government to immediately release Bruno and Marc-Henri, and to stop arrests for homosexuality in a country where men who have sex with men are considered by the National Strategic Plan 2011-2015 as at high risk of HIV contamination. End.
