Fighting For Marriage Equality In HK

Same-sex couples in the territory have someone new to fight their corner, with the launch of a group advocating gay marriage and rights.\n

The first aim of the founders is to fight for same-sex couples with foreign citizenship to get married through local consulates.

Next, they want civil partnerships and same-sex marriages held overseas to be recognized.

Founders Guy Ho Wing-kai of Canada and Hongkonger Henry Lam Kuok-yin married in Vancouver in 2011 but their union is not recognized by the government here. Ho said: “We are legally married but still treated like boyfriends.” He said in cases where a hospital only allows visits by family, he would be not be able to see Lam or allowed to sign any papers on his behalf.
