BILL TO RECOGNISE OVERSEAS SAME-SEX MARRIAGE FAILS IN SENATE

The Greens private bill to amend the Marriage Act to allow same sex marriages entered into in foreign countries to be recognised by Australian law, has failed to pass in the Senate.? The bill was defeated on Thursday, with voting 44-28.

Several Labor MPs voted against the bill including ministers Stephen Conroy and David Feeney. In an historic move, Liberal senator Sue Boyce crossed the floor to vote in favour of the bill.

Marriage equality advocates see Boyce’s move as an indication of the growing support for marriage equality and are calling on Tony Abbott to allow his members a conscience vote.
