Australia’s first intersex mayor steps down

Tony Briffa, Australia's first openly intersex mayor, steps down in Hobsons Bay, west Melbourne.

Despite being re-elected to the Hobsons Bay city council, in the western suburbs of Melbourne, Briffa announced last Tuesday that he would not stand as mayor again.

‘I had a very successful and enjoyable term and leave it full of pride,’ Briffa told the Star Observer.

‘Highlights of my mayorality for me… was being the first mayor to march in Pride march wearing full robes and chain of office, it was wonderful,’ said Briffa.
