2015: a year of LGBTI victories worth celebrating

What a year it has been for the LGBTI community!

In 2015, the human rights of LGBTI people repeatedly took centre stage at the United Nations.

A handful of countries made marriage equality the law of the land, while others recognised civil unions also for same-sex couples. Members of the LGBTI community were elected to their country’s parliaments. Historical gender identity laws were approved. Pride celebrations were held for the first time. Anti-propaganda laws and bans on homosexuality were repealed.

2015 was full of moments to celebrate for the LGBTI community, but much more still has to be done to advance the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex persons around the world. History is in the making, and the struggle towards equality will continue in 2016.
