Botswana Lgbt organisation to hold first Agm and elections

in BOTSWANA,

Lesbians, Gays and Bisexuals of Botswana (LeGaBiBo) will hold its first AGM, Annual General Meeting on Saturday, June 25 at the University of Botswana.

Although LeGaBiBo is not legally registered with the registrar of societies, it has a constitution that allows for an AGM every 12 months. This will be the first such event since LeGaBiBo was initiated the organisation will also hold its first election.

“We have received overwhelming response from the LGBT community and still more people are confirming their attendance. We are accepting them even though the venue is too small to take large capacity we are expecting,” said Pilot Matambo, a LeGaBiBo Officer

Last year LeGaBiBo worked with a consultant to develop a three-year strategic plan and this AGM will enable members to see the strategic plan and elect board members to run the organization and see the strategic plan through.

Said Matambo, “Until now the board has been made up of co-opted members was not that effective, but this election by registered members will regularise that. We will have a fair election.”

Caine Youngman, LeGaBiBo’s coordinator said they have extended the deadline for members to declare their interest in board membership until Saturday 25 June. This will enable members from outside the capital Gaberone to submit their names for the poll.

In marking this important day LeGaBiBo will be joined by representatives from interested organisations such as Botswana Network on Ethics and Law, BONELA, the rights organisation Ditshwanelo, the sex work group Sisonke, the Botswana Council of Churches and YWCA amongst others.

Matambo said after the new board has been elected, they will attend a Monitoring and Evaluation training, one of the recommendations of the strategic plan.
