ILGA, the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association wishes to congratulate its 15 member groups in Argentina together with the Argentinean Congress for its vote on the “Egalitarian marriage law” which will grant equal marriage and adoption rights to same-sex partners.
This makes Argentina the tenth country in the world to grant equal marriage rights, the second in the Americas after Canada and the first ever in Latin America and the Caribbean. Argentina adds its name to the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Canada, South Africa, Norway, Sweden and recently Portugal and Iceland.

Gloria Careaga, co-secretary general of ILGA:
This triumph is the result of a long struggle as well as the social changes pushed by the LGBTI community. This conquest not only protects the rights of same-sex couples but it also shakes the whole social structure. Latin America and the whole world welcome this historic achievement with pride.
Renato Sabbadini, co-secretary general of ILGA:
Today, there is definitely more freedom and equality in the world thanks to Argentina: an example for the many countries in Southern and Northern hemispheres which still consider Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex people as second-class citizens.
