The deputy director-general of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) become the first senior official in Taiwan to publicly voice support for same-sex marriage when he laid out his position on his Facebook page Monday.
The CDC's Shih Wen-yi advocated legalizing same-sex marriage from a health perspective, and he said the issue should be promoted "by eliminating every barrier."
Shih said he believed same-sex marriage could limit the occurrence of dangerous sexual behavior, control the spread of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), and limit the amount needed to treat the diseases.
